3. Aladdin gets entangled once again

Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular,” which has been performing at California Adventure’s Hyperion Theater for the past 11 years, is reportedly on the cutting block – yes, once again; long-time Disneyland Resort enthusiasts will recall that Team Disney Anaheim had toyed with the idea of replacing the show with "Toy Story: The Musical" some three years ago, but ultimately decided to back off once fan uproar reached a fevered pitch.

(Just why has “Aladdin” proven to be so popular with SoCal guests?  [The show has been running for nearly the entirety of California Adventure’s existence, which is no small feat, regardless of the constant death threats hanging over it.]  The answer lies mostly with the Genie, whose dialogue is constantly updated to reflect recent [Disney] events – much in the vein of The Mikado, which has managed to be in continuous production for the past 129 years.)

This time, Disney Dose says, the cancellation may very well be permanent.  This turn of events seems to stem from Shanghai Disneyland, which, despite its string of delays, is finally nearing the home stretch of its construction.

Once Disney's biggest current project is completed, Parks and Resorts' huge pool of resources, both financial and personnel, will be freed up once again – and rumor has it that a huge swath of Imagineers are just itching to turn their attention back to the American parks, with such projects as Hollywood Studios' equally oft-delayed Star Wars Land first on their agenda.  "Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular," it would seem, is also high on that list.

What will replace the show?  Disney Dose posits that a brand-new “Tangled: The Musical” will be making its way – eventually – to the park.

The story goes a little something like this:  the new Tangled production is expected to premiere on the Disney Magic cruise ship sometime in 2015.  (“Toy Story: The Musical” similarly debuted aboard the Disney Cruise Line before being considered to deploy to California Adventure.)  After a two-year exclusive run, it’ll be brought to the park, upgraded with a bigger cast and more elaborate sets, and maybe even kick off a bigger, broader renovation of the Hyperion Theater, as well.

Should it prove to be a successful transition, Disney is reportedly also eying bringing “Tangled” to Walt Disney World, to boot (where it might replace yet another long-running, fan-favorite show, “Beauty and the Beast – Live on Stage”).

Don’t worry, though – “Aladdin” isn’t rumored to be closing until sometime in early 2017, leaving plenty of time for farewell performances.
