Walt Disney World 50th, Disney

In the light of the many changes that have come to Walt Disney World in 2021, in this week's big debate we ask the question, has Walt Disney World been crossed off your 2022 to-do list?

Me and my family have always loved Disney and have plans to take our two boys there just as soon as COVID-19 allows us safely to do so. Being from the UK, a trip to Orlando is no easy or cheap thing to do and has been made even more of a challenge in the last couple of years.

This year we have seen further upcharges including the loss of FastPass+ and the introduction of Genie+ Lightning Lanes as well as the loss for many of the much loved Disney Magical Express. We have seen Early entry time reduced but available in every park each day which has its advantages and disadvantages.

A Theme Park Tourist reader emailed me with a review of their recent Walt Disney World visit, disillusioned with the experience, "The parks themselves weren't all that exciting and have lost a lot of their luster. The new "parades" are more of a hindrance than entertaining since it's just one float with a few characters that the cast members have to move all of the guests to the side for. The rides? The new one like Remy's Ratatouille Adventure isn't all that exciting as it has a lot of the ride resting on the shoulders of watching scenes on screens. My best friend and I ADORED the Rise of the Resistance ride because the props in that ride are tangible, real things right in front of your eyes! Life-size AT-ATs, a lightsaber cutting through a ceiling; the other new rides don't even remotely compare. The characters? I understand that Disney is trying their best to still continue the experience while keeping their staff safe, but when Belle is behind a fence and there are 20 families all pressed along the fence trying to get a chance to interact with her or exchange a few words, the whole character experience loses its touch. Disney doesn't always line families up to take photos, and sometimes it's a free for all that will leave many disappointed."

However, on a positive note, Walt Disney World has reopened a number of live entertainment options including "Monster Inc. Laugh Floor" and "Beauty and the Beast - Live on Stage" as well as new experiences such as "Disney Enchantment", "Harmonious" and "Disney KiteTails". It is great to see that the classic "Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular" has now reopened as of Sunday, December 19.

So, are there too many upcharges? Has Disney lost its creativity with many attractions now based on IPs? Is Disney just too expensive for the experience you are now getting? So many questions long-time avid Walt Disney World fans are asking themselves so here is our Big Debate...

I was encouraged to hear that Walt Disney World Temporarily Adds Attractions to Genie+ which should enhance the experience for those visiting over the festive period. In addition, from now running through January 3, 2022, Disney has announced that they will extend Early Theme Park Entry for hotel guests from 30 to 60 minutes daily. It was also wonderful to hear the excitement of the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular performers in the video released ready for its reopening on December 19. We are all yearning for more of those positive Disney announcements that give us the Disney tingle and show that the magic is still truly alive.
