4. Never eat or drink on the monorail

Monorail

Though it isn’t technically a rule, many would consider it common courtesy to refrain from eating or drinking on the monorail. Between that occasional wobbly ride and the often crowded monorail cars, just imagine for a moment an adorably hyper three year-old bopping around with an ice cream, or a full, open soda. Oh, the potential for one messy disaster! Chances are, your fellow monorail riders don’t want to be wearing your treats. There typically isn’t enough free space to warrant a comfortable snack break, so finish your yums before boarding, or close them up and pack them away for the few minutes you’ll be traveling.

5. Never fail to admire the view

Monorail views over Epcot

The monorail track reaches heights of over 60 feet at some points, so naturally the semi-aerial views can be pretty impressive at times. While many riders are fiddling with electronic devices or lost in conversation, they may not even take notice of the beauty that lies below. Even when excited guest chatter overwhelms the monorail spiel that highlights the passing sights, you can appreciate the visions even if you aren’t familiar with specifically what you’re looking at.

Topiaries, statues, and fountains don’t necessarily grace the span of Disney property, but landscaping is a priority resort-wide. Sometimes, you can even spot grazing deer in the fields between the trees below the monorail lines. On the Magic Kingdom Resort loop, you’ll certainly appreciate the bird’s eye view unique to the monorail’s perspective. Consider it one of those Disney details (albeit on a broad canvas) that many guests simply overlook. Always remember to take notice of those little details, as that is the most important factor that truly makes a Disney park unique.

6. Never fail to take advantage of an empty monorail car

Monorail misbehavior

On those rare occasions that you find yourself lucky enough to be greeted with an empty car for your monorail ride, take full advantage. This is a blissfully remarkable scenario, indeed! Relax, stretch out, and make the most of it. Keep safety in mind, of course (refer back to the number one item on this list). If you simply have to run a muck, do it in a manner that won’t find you pulling into the station needing a stretcher. Always keep yourself steadied and secure.

Conversely, when sharing a monorail car, always remember to be courteous toward your fellow passengers, and instruct your children to do the same. No mattter how excitable and energetic your family may feel, it’s possible that your monorail neighbor is tired, maybe even ill, or simply not in the mood to become part of an impromptu slam dance routine, human pinball game, or haphazard toy tossing episode. The worst may be the shrill screamers. Naturally, an overtired, crying baby can’t necessarily be silenced, and any reasonable person should accept this without making a rude display. However, a child who just likes to scream and shriek can and should be reminded that this is a good place to demonstrate “indoor voices”. One thing that many park-goers sincerely treasure about a Walt Disney World visit is the opportunity to see the boundless joy and wonder displayed by the youngest of guests. Those of us whose children are grown, or even perhaps desensitized to the Disney magic after so many visits, thrive on seeing the sheer awe reflected in the enthusiasm of the little ones. But… it’s not so cute and endearing when the child is acting unruly or being blatantly inconsiderate. Kids will be kids, but being a kid does not equate to being a pint-sized terrorizer.

With a touch of common sense and a hint of common courtesy, the monorail experience can be one of the most memorable aspects of any Walt Disney World visit. Though it isn’t unique to Disney, the monorail is undoubtedly one of those elements that stands iconic to the resort. It provides the build-up to your visit, and the escape you may be eager for when you want nothing more than rest and rejuvenation. Much like any part of a Disney vacation, the magic is there for the taking. You need only respect and embrace it.
