After several months of not-so secret construction down on the far side of Sunset Boulevard, Disney has finally made its new “flex space” theater project official. Now confirmed to be named the Sunset Showcase Theater, this new venue will essentially replace the outgoing Premiere Theater as a home for special events
In addition, Disney has announced that guests will be able to check this new space out in just six weeks when this location plays host to a new entertainment offering: Club Disney. The name might sound a little strange, but the concept behind this new attraction is one that frequent guests at Disney's Hollywood Studios know all too well...
1. Club Disney will be a dance party...that takes place indoors
One of the most common components of nearly every special event at Disney’s Hollywood Studios is the presence of loud dance parties where guests young and old can bust a move to a variety of popular tunes, occasionally related to the ongoing event. Whether its Frozen Summer Fun or the erstwhile Star Wars Weekends, these fun little diversions never attracted much in the way of crowds, but they certainly helped bolster their respective events with an additional fun thing to do.
Club Mickey looks to duplicate this experience, but instead of guests dropping in while they're walking by Center Stage or waiting for fireworks guests who want to get their groove on will need to head inside this new building. The official announcement isn’t clear how Club Disney will fit into a theater space, only promising that this new entertainment offering will immerse guests in a “club environment” with top 40 music mixed with Disney tunes spun by a live DJ, all while projections of Disney characters are splashed on the walls.
And for those who are less inclined to participate than other members of their party, there will also be a seating area, snack bar and phone charging station in a different area inside the venue.
2. Guests at this attraction may get the chance to see some lesser-known characters
Back in 2012, Disney California Adventure debuted the short lived Dancin’ With Disney party, and while it only lasted a year at the park, this attraction was fairly popular with guests thanks to its use of memorable characters that weren’t often seen in the park. In the same way, Club Disney will be bringing out lots of characters to help join in the fun with guests and provide a unique interaction opportunity.
Though we don’t have a list quite yet of who will be appearing as part of the festivities, we’d imagine that characters who frequent the seasonal Character-Palooza secret event might make an appearance here (Character Palooza doesn’t typically happen at Disney's Hollywood Studios until after Daylight Savings Time ends anyway). If this is indeed true, it would really bolster this event, as scarcely-used characters like Gepetto, Mushu and Brer Fox have been known to show up on Sunset Boulevard during Palooza nights from time to time.
While there’s no way to know who exactly will show up as part of this new event, we won’t have to wait long to find out…
