Alton Towers has revealed that a new 4-D attraction, Ice Age Dawn of the Dinosaurs – The 4-D Experience, will debut at the park on March 24, 2012.
Based on the third animated movie in the popular Ice Age series, the new addition will open in March. It will feature updated footage from the film, which is being converted into a 4-D format by SimEx-Iwerks. It will be the centrepiece of a new Ice Age-themed area, which will also host a shop selling branded merchandise.
The park has confirmed that Ice Age Dawn of the Dinosaurs – The 4-D Experience will replace the outgoing Go!Go!Go! Show in the Cloud Cuckoo Land Theatre. This is likely to mean that the new area will be on a relatively small scale, with the theatre itself receiving an update to accommodate moving seats and other "4-D" elements.
The first Ice Age movie was released in 2002, and was produced by Blue Sky Studios. Having proven to be a massive box office success, it spawned two sequels: Ice Age: The Meltdown and Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs.
The Sid and Scrat characters from the Ice Age movies will be on-hand in the new area to meet-and-greet guests. The Alton Towers Resort's Splash Landing Hotel will also feature two interactive Ice Age-themed rooms. The resort is likely to cross-promote its new addition in conjunction with Twentieth Century Fox, which will release a fourth movie, Ice Age: Continental Drift, in July 2012.
Describing the new addition, Alton Towers' Divisional Director Ian Crabbe said: "We are continually developing our products to ensure the best possible experience for our guests and bringing Ice Age Dawn of the Dinosaurs - The 4-D Experience to the resort in 2012 allows us to add another first to our existing portfolio of fantastic rides and attractions."
Robert Marick, Executive Vice President of Fox Consumer Products, said of the deal with the UK park: "Alton Towers Resort is a fantastic destination for the Ice Age fan. Ice Age is a phenomenal property with global appeal and the Alton Towers venue will be the first immersive Ice Age attractuin that can be experience across multiple paltforms throughout the park."
The Go!Go!Go! show ran for a single year at Alton Towers, having debuted in spring 2011. Featuring a range of child-friendly upbeat pop songs, it told the story of a mischievous, sock-thieving creature known as the Fluffalope.
Ice Age Dawn of the Dinosaurs – The 4-D Experience will be one of two new attractions to open at Alton Towers in 2012. The park has already confirmed that a new indoor ride, Nemesis: What Lies Beneath, will open in the Forbidden Valley area. It is widely expected to be based around a miniature drop tower, and to take guests into underground "catacombs" to meet the Nemesis alien itself.
