Six Flags New England has named its new rollercoaster as Gotham City Gauntlet Escape from Arkham Asylum, ahead of its opening in April 2011.
The coaster is being relocated from the closed Kentucky Kingdom park, where it was known as Road Runner Express. It will open in April 2011 in the DC Superhero Adventures area of the park, and will be themed around the fictional city that forms the setting for the Batman comic strips and movies.
Gotham City Gauntlet Escape from Arkham Asylum is a classic steel wild mouse coaster manufactured by German firm Maurer Söhne. It sees riders boarding four-person cars before being carried up a 49-feet-tall lift hill, and reaches a top speed of 28 miles per hour as it careens through a series of sharp turns.
The backstory for the ride will be that riders are attempting to escape from Arkham Asylum, the home of Gotham City's criminally insane. The ride's cars will be themed to police cars, taxi cabs and "Bat Villains" ahead of its installation at Six Flags New England.
The ride is the only one of Kentucky Kingdom's attractions that was retained by Six Flags as part of a deal which saw ownership of the rest transfer to the Kentucky State Fair Board.
Gotham City Gauntlet Escape from Arkham Asylum will become the tenth rollercoaster at Six Flag New England, and the first to be added to the park since spinning coaster Pandemonium in 2005.
