Universal Orlando has reopened the former Triceratops Encounter attraction at Islands of Adventure, under the new name of Triceratops Discovery Trail.
Triceratops Encounter, which is located in the Jurassic Park section of Islands of Adventure, originally opened with the park in 1999 but closed in 2005. However, it was left in place and has now been revived under the new name, with the attraction itself being identical to its previous incarnation. The attraction is not yet listed on the park's map, with team members telling Orlando Attractions Magazine that it is currently in a "soft opening" period.
Triceratops Encounter is a partial recreation of a scene from the Jurassic Park movie in which the lead characters encounter a sick triceratops. Guests are able to watch a "veterinary technician" perform exams on the triceratops, with advanced animatronics being used to create a sense of realism. A baby triceratops is also on display while guests wait to enter the attraction. A video of the Triceratops Discovery Trail is embedded below:
The motivation behind Universal's decision to reopen Triceratops Discovery Trail may be the need to draw some Islands of Adventure guests away from the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. The Potter-themed land has proved a hugely popular addition to Islands of Adventure since opening earlier this year, resulting in serious capacity issues during peak periods. Bringing the dinosaur-themed attraction back online offers a low-cost route to add additional capacity elsewhere in the park, even if the impact on crowds at the Wizarding World is likely to be minimal.
