American Plunge drop

Lightning struck a guard shack overlooking the American Plunge log flume at Silver Dollar City on Thanksgiving morning, causing a minor fire.

The shack sustained extensive damage in the fire, which was visible several miles away. However, firefighters were able to contain the flames and American Plunge is expected to open as normal for the 2011 season. The ride is currently closed for the winter, and does not operate during the park's Old Time Christmas events.

Standing some 40-feet high, the shack is used to monitor riders on the American Plunge. The ride, which originally opened in 1981, sees guests "racing" to the summit of a hill before "plunging" into the water below at 35 miles per hour.
