The Dueling Dragons rollercoasters at Universal's Islands of Adventure have closed to enable them to be rethemed in time for the upcoming opening of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
Dueling Dragons will be renamed Dragon Challenge when it returns, and given a new storyline based on the Triwizard Tournament as featured in the Harry Potter stories. The ride is set to remain closed until at least March 16, in order to undergo painting work and updates to the coasters' trains.
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is set to open by May 28 at the latest, and Universal's decision to close Dueling Dragons suggests that a soft opening could occur even sooner. It is also possible that the ride will reopen in advance of the rest of the Wizarding World, with Universal conducting a staggered opening.
Dueling Dragons' two tracks, Fire and Ice, will be renamed as the Hungarian Horntail and the Chinese Fireball when the Wizarding World opens. Universal has promised that "guests will marvel at the blazing Goblet of Fire and the shining Triwizard Cup" as they pass through the ride's rethemed queue.
Full details of the attractions, restaurants and shops that will form part of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter can be found in TPT's recent news story.
