Drayton Manor has revealed that it will add a Zamperla Air Race attraction for the 2014 season - making it the only theme park in the UK to add a thrill ride for the new season.
Air Race will take riders on a "stomach-churning aerial adventure", turning them upside down at heights of up to eight metres. 24 riders will be accommodated in its six, four-seater aeroplanes, with "pilots" experiencing forces of almost 4G. The attraction is due to open in time for the school summer holidays, and will sit in the Action Park area of Drayton Manor alongside a host of other thrill rides.
The ride will start with the planes gliding from side to side at increasing heights while circling around the central control tower. They will then undertake a series of barrel rolls in both directions as they soar and dive through the air. A video showing a Zamperla Air Race in action is embedded below:
Drayton Manor was rumoured back in 2012 to be adding a new roller coaster for the 2014 season, but has opted to spend £1.2 million on Air Race instead. Managing Director Colin Bryan said of the new ride: "Adding a new thrill ride to the park is always an exciting occasion, and Air Race is a fantastic addition that is sure to be loved by adults and children alike. Our ongoing investment in new attractions has maintained our status as one of the UK’s leading tourism destinations, and we look forward to the continued development of Drayton Manor Theme Park for years to come."
Our recent article looking at 14 new rides at UK theme parks for the 2014 season revealed that the vast majority of this year's new additions are aimed at children. Pleasurewood Hills will add a wild mouse roller coaster, but this is an existing attraction that has been relocated from Flamingo Land.
