LEGOLAND Windsor will open its Atlantis Submarine Voyage attraction on Friday, May 20, 2011, and the first riders have already had the chance to experience the new addition.
Atlantis Submarine Voyage is the first LEGO-themed underwater ride in the world, and combines a dark ride with Sea Life exhibits in a unique new concept. It has been added to the Adventure Land area of LEGOLAND Windsor, at a total cost of £8 million.
Riders travel aboard "submarine" vehicles, which can carry up to 14 guests each. The submarines travel around a 1 million litre ocean tank, offering views of over 2500 tropical fish, sharks and rays. In addition, Atlantis Submarine Voyage features more than 100 LEGO models, designed to recreate the mythical lost city of Atlantis. The submarines are suspended on a track that moves them silently through the water, so as not to stress the residents of the tank.
The photos below show Sea Cadets from the Windsor & Eton Unit test-riding Atlantis Submarine Voyage prior to its opening. They also show 7-year-old LEGO enthusiast George Gray stepping out of one of the ride's submarines, and a sculpture of King Nepture which is made up of over 100,000 LEGO bricks.
Merlin Entertainments Group operates both the LEGOLAND theme parks and Sea Life centres around the world. It has previously located smaller Sea Life attractions in its theme parks, including the Sharkbait Reef aquarium at Alton Towers. However Atlantis Submarine Voyage represents the company's first attempt to incorporate the Sea Life brand into an actual ride.
