Key informationOur rating:
Laser gun ride
One of Chessington’s most heavily-themed rides, Tomb Blaster started life as Fifth Dimension, a dark ride created by world-renowned designer John Wardley. In 1994, it was transformed into Terror Tomb, before receiving a second major overhaul to take its current form in 2002.
Tomb Blaster is an interactive laser gun ride, which still employs the original Fifth Dimension ride system (which, crucially, enables the ride’s vehicles to face in different directions depending on the current scene). It sees guests battling their through an ancient Egyptian tomb, with points on offer for hitting as many of the undead as possible.
The ride features some significant set-piece theming elements, including an enormous statue of Anubis. The queue-line decoration is also extensive, with guests queuing around the exterior and interior of the “tomb”.Review:
Huge crowds descend on Tomb Blasters on busy days at Chessington, and there are good reasons why. It is one of the best-themed rides in the UK, and would be a great visual spectacle even without the laser gun element. With it, though, it is incredibly addictive for families, with siblings (and parents) demanding repeat rides in order to top each other’s scores. Very young children, though, will be intimidated by some of the scenes, particularly the larger ghouls.
Tomb Blasters’ capacity is not as high as that of similar rides, as it does load continuously. This means lengthy queues are very likely in the late morning and afternoon on busy days, so try and ride early (when you’ll be able to run straight around for a second turn) or just before the park closes.Top Tip:
Be prepared to strenuously exercise your trigger finger during Tomb Blasters. There are a lot of targets to aim for (probably too many), and those that fire the most rapidly will often be rewarded with higher scores.
