Five years on from the very first announcement, TRON Lightcycle / Run will now officially open at the Magic Kingdom in spring 2023 but the question remains, will it open in time for the 50th anniversary?
The ride, which will serve as the sister attraction to Shanghai Disneyland’s version, was initially slated for a 2021 opening with original plans hoping to see the attraction begin to welcome guests in time for Walt Disney World’s 50th Anniversary which began on October 1st last year.
D23 Expo’s Parks, Experiences and Products panel has now confirmed that TRON is working towards a spring 2023 opening date, before offering audiences a brief look at the upcoming attraction via a video which showed Disney parks chairman Josh D'Amaro taking a test ride on the long awaited Magic Kingdom addition.
After light testing on the canopy first began back in June, human testing officially began on TRON at the end of August, a largely positive sign towards the ride’s progress. Though there is still a considerable amount of theming yet to be completed around the ride’s surrounding area, guests now have a better idea of when they could finally get the chance to experience this much anticipated attraction.
The ride was, unfortunately, subject to a number of delays given the COVID-19 pandemic, with work on the attraction having been paused for a number of months. Now, with the 50th anniversary having received an official end date of March 31st, 2023, TRON’s expected spring opening window certainly leaves the door open for some uncertainty as to whether the ride will still debut as part of the celebrations.
While Disney's main focus may still be getting this attraction open in time for March 31st, lack of an exact opening date at this stage is sure to concern some. This opening date is also likely to be much later than some were expecting, with recent testing having led many to believe TRON’s official opening wasn’t too far away.
Do you think TRON Lightcycle / run will open in time for the end of the 50th? Is this date in line with what you were expecting?
