The Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin at Walt Disney World is often a favorite for kids. It opened way back in 1998 and has seen few updates since then. It has a number of broken effects and often needs maintenance meaning it is definitely in need of an overhaul.
The rumor is that there is already a 'Lightyear' ride in development and if the new upcoming Disney Pixar film which opens in theatres on June 17, is a success then it will be full steam ahead to bring it to Walt Disney World to replace the aging Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin.
The new CG-animated 'Lightyear' movie stars Chris Evans as the titular space ranger, who, along with his fellow astronauts, becomes marooned on an alien world, and must find a way to return home. The Buzz in 'Lightyear' is far from the animated Buzz we all know and love but many may think this realistic version will fit far better in the the Tomorrowland of Magic Kingdom than the current one does.
We would expect the new ride to be a similar style to the updated Ant-Man and the Wasp: Nano Battle which replaced Astro Blasters at Hong Kong Disneyland in 2019. We assume the latest technology will be used in a planned 'Lightyear' ride including more modern targets that are potentially projection based and screens showing scores in the vehicles.
A new ride based on 'Lightyear' would have an all new story and would likely see a complete overhaul of the current Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin making an excellent new addition to Tomorrowland at the Magic Kingdom to join what will be the newly opened Tron / Lightcycle Run.
