Though 2017 saw the opening of a new land with Toy Story Land debuting at Disney's Hollywood Studios this past June, this year saw more quite a few closures as well, including a long-running show at Disney's Hollywood Studios, the Magic Kingdom's most hated attractions and even an entire land at Disney's Animal Kingdom as well. Here's everything we said goodbye to so far this year, and one attraction that is still yet to close...
1 Stitch’s Great Escape
Location: Magic Kingdom
Last Day of Operation: January 6, 2018
Though it was rumored in 2016, and again in 2017, it looks like 2018 finally saw the end of Stitch's Great Escape at the Magic Kingdom. Disney placed this attraction on seasonal status back in January, and unfortunately for fans of Stitch's Great Escape, it never reopened. And while some might have held out hope for this attraction returning, leaked photos show much of the attraction in ruins behind closed doors, which makes this the first casualty of 2018 (even though we didn't know it at the time!)
2. The Circle of Life: An Environmental Fable
Last Day of Operation: February 3, 2018
Back in 2017 an unexpected refurbishment fueled rumors that the Lion King attraction Circle of Life: An Environmental Fable (which has been showing at The Land pavilion since 1995) swirled and while the attraction did hang on for just a few months, in February 2018 we had to say goodbye to this attraction forever while the theater inside was remodeled for use by the Disney Performing Arts group, to use for performances and classes primarily for visiting youth.
3 Discovery Island Carnivale
Location: Disney's Animal Kingdom
Last Day of Operation: June 16, 2018
This year, Disney opened Donald's Dino-Rama, which is a brand new permanent character hub in DinoLand USA. And in addition to the new character meet and greets that debuted as part of this attraction, this character hub will also host a nightly DJ Dance party, which will take place near Chester and Hester's Dino-Rama from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM.
And while this definitely is a fun part of this new character attraction, unfortunately it came at the expense of the Discovery Island Carnivale, which was another dance party that takes place nightly outside the nearby Flame Tree Barbecue quick service restaurant that featured more obscure characters like Panchito and Jose Carioca from The Three Caballeros.
