Disney Set to Replace PhotoPass Photographers With Machines

Past the point of no return

It's no secret that one of the big areas where Disney has been making cuts is with their Cast Members. Nearly a dozen characters have been removed over the last few months, and hours have been shortened at several attractions as well. However, while these developments have certainly been disappointing, these are the types of changes that can be reversed. Even though we might be missing some of the characters at the Magic Kingdom or Disney's Animal Kingdom, Disney can always bring these familiar faces back, and hours at attractions can be extended at any point.

However, replacing PhotoPass photographers with machines feels like a change that can't really be undone, and losing the magic of the candid photographs taken by PhotoPass photographers during that first character hug or that unique interaction is something that really devalues the entire experience. It will also be up to characters (and their attendants) to make sure that guests are smiling and posing at the right time (and in the right area), as the machine can't move the same way a human photographer would, which means less interaction time, and more posing time.

It's also worth mentioning that the removal of PhotoPass photographers at these locations will also mean that guests who were previously able to ask PhotoPass photographers to take photos with their own personal devices (cameras phones, etc.) won't be able to do that any more, and guests who want photos on their phones will have to take them themselves.

It is unknown if this change is going to be permanent or temporary, but judging by respones on social media, this is not a popular development with fans, so hopefully Disney reconsiders this move, as we can't imagine a single way that a photo-taking machine would be superior to a PhotoPass photographer at capturing the magic of a character meet and greet.
