Though yesterday started out as an otherwise unremarkable day at Disney's Hollywood Studios, something strange happened during the evening that we haven't seen at a Disney park in several years: almost the entirety of Disney's Hollywood Studios went down due to technical issues. Sometime between 5:00 and 5:30 pm, Disney's Hollywood Studios experienced a massive power failure (reportedly in the air conditioning system) that caused almost all attractions in the park to be shuttered immediately, and remain closed for several hours, causing park operations to grind to a virtual halt.
What happened inside the park during the technical issues on July 12, 2018
This shutdown lasted a little over three hours hours at the park, and though there were a limited amount of options available for guests to experience during this outage (MuppetVision 3D stayed open and a regularly-scheduled performance of the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular went on as normal), by and large the entire park essentially shut down in the middle of the evening due to these technical issues, with Cast Members directing guests to shops and outside areas of the park.
In addition to the attraction closures, all of the shops, restaurants, and other indoor areas of the park did not have air conditioning, which is why the majority of character meet and greets also shuttered during the outage yesterday. And with the temperature rising and attractions not functioning, you can probably guess what happened next...
Guests leave the park in droves, and Disney tries to keep the park empty
With limited options for entertainment and no A/C in indoor areas, it wasn't long before guests picked up and left, which led to a massive exodus from the park. As the outage wore on, Disney began advising guests trying to park hop to Disney's Hollywood Studios not to come to the park, reportedly even stopping bus service to the park. However, it should be noted that Disney stopped short of actually closing the park during this outage, continuing to direct guests to either wait patiently for the issue to be resolved, or encouraging them to visit other Disney parks.
