Next year is going to be a big one for Disney's Hollywood Studios. Not only will it bring the much-anticipated opening of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge late in the year, but it will also see the debut of Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway at the center of the park in mid-2019 as well. But it looks like Disney isn't quite done yet adding new attractions for this park, as Disney surprised us earlier this week by announcing yet another new offering that will be coming next year.

Introducing Lightning McQueen's Racing Academy, coming soon to Disney's Hollywood Studios

Though Cars hasn't exactly been a blockbuster hit at the box office, Cars Land has done incredible things at Disney California Adventure, and it looks like Disney may be trying to bring some of that magic to Disney's Hollywood Studios. At this week's opening of Toy Story Land, Disney took some time to announce a new show based on the world of Cars called Lightning McQueen's Racing Academy.

Though specifics about the nature of this just-announced show were not immediately made available, according to Imagineer Kathy Mangum, this new entertainment offering will be "a show unlike anything we've got anywhere else," and will feature well-known characters from the Cars films. In addition to Lightning McQueen the show will also feature Cruz Ramirez and Mater, and will immerse guests in the world of Cars and bring them face to face with racing legend Lightning McQueen who will all be on hand to demonstrate racing techniques on a new simulator and share some of his biggest career highlights with guests during the show.

This new show will debut sometime early next year at the Sunset Showcase venue

Scheduled to open sometime early next year, this show will be performed daily in the Sunset Showcase facility, which is near the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster (currently behind a gate) and has hosted seasonal events in the past, like Club Disney and Club Villain. This venue may seem like an odd choice for a new show considering its size, but Disney may be planning to use extensive projection or audio-animatronic effects to bring these characters to life, and could be adding some kind of permanent seating inside this venue to make it more like a traditional theater. Of course, this is all speculation on our part, but right now the Sunset Showcase is simply a big empty box, so some work will need to be done on the interior to make this ready for a show that will be performed daily.
