Though it is true that the FastPass+ system isn't perfect, for better or worse this system has become an integral part of the Walt Disney World vacation experience, and as such, Disney is constantly looking for ways to improve and optimize this tool. However, not all of these changes are always accompanied by big announcements, and over the past few weeks, a number of interesting, quiet changes have been made to this system that could impact your next visit! No matter whether you love or hate FastPass+, here are all the small tweaks and adjustments that are being made to FastPass+ that you need to know about!
1. Epcot changes FastPass+ tier system for the summer
This month Epcot made a very interesting change to the park's FastPass+ tiers, moving the Mickey and Friends Character Spot attraction into tier 1, alongside Mission: Space, Test Track, IllumiNations, and Soarin' Around the World. This change should make availability for some of the harder-to-get FastPass+ reservations at this park (we're thinking specifically about Test Track here) a little bit easier, as the character spot addition should take some of the pressure off tier 1. However, it is interesting that Disney has added to this park's Tier 1 FastPass+ choices, but hasn't bumped any of the less-popular tier 1 attractions (like Mission: Space, for instance) down to tier 2.
This change is expected to stay at least through the summer, and it will be interesting to see if Disney keeps this new structure after the busy summer season concludes in September.
2. Disney's Hollywood Studios getting a tier overhaul after the opening of Toy Story Land
Though it hasn't happened yet, effective June 30th, Disney's Hollywood Studios will also have a new tier system in place. As you might expect, new Toy Story Land attractions Slinky Dog Dash and Alien Swirling Saucers will join Toy Story Midway Mania in Tier 1. However, in an interesting development, it looks like other popular FastPass+ attractions at this park like Fantasmic!, the Tower of Terror, and the Rock 'n' roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith have all been knocked down to Tier 2.
This restructuring is especially strange, as it will make these in-demand FastPass+ reservations easier to obtain, which is a bad thing if Disney is trying to direct crowds away from Toy Story Land, which will undoubtedly be popular during its opening weeks. This change will likely stay through the summer, but hopefully Disney restructures the FastPass+ scheme for this park in the coming months, as having the only tier 1 attractions inside Toy Story Land doesn't seem like a great strategy for spreading out crowds.
