Earlier this month, Disney introduced several new features for My Disney Experience, including more accurate wait times and a new Digital Key feature that allows guests to use their phones like a MagicBand to unlock hotel room doors. In the days since these improvements were made however, Disney has announced even more reasons for guests to stay glued to their phones on their next Disney vacation experience.
New Play Disney Parks app coming this summer
Though My Disney Experience has been the hub of all things Disney at Walt Disney World, this summer Disney will be launching a whole new app that will allow guests to unlock exclusive experiences at Walt Disney World (as well as Disneyland Resort) through activities that interact with their surrounding environment.
According to an official description of the app, Play Disney Parks will turn wait time into play time with family and friends at certain locations. And the more guests explore in Disney parks, the more there will be to discover on the app.
Though this announcement sounds pretty vague, based on this small amount of information, we’d guess Disney is trying their hand at creating something like Pokémon Go for guests in their parks. We know wait times are only getting longer, and with FastPass+ reservations getting harder and harder to come by for blockbuster attractions like Toy Story Mania and Flight of Passage (at least for most guests), Disney is likely trying to find creative ways to keep guests happy (and in the Disney ecosystem) while they are waiting in standby lines around the park, and this new app is a first attempt to do so via smartphone.
While we don’t know much about what the gameplay for this new app will be like (and whether or not it might build on other interactive games around the resort like Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom or Agent P’s World Showcase Adventure), we should know more in the coming weeks as Disney prepares this new game for release.
And interestingly, this new game isn’t the only way Disney is trying to mitigate long lines at its parks
