We've known for several years now that Disney California Adventure will eventually be home to a brand new Marvel Land, anchored by the already-opened Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission Breakout. However, in the time since the official announcement of this new land, we've only gotten the smallest of hints and teases about what could be a part of this new land, with nothing concrete officially confirmed. That is, until this week. Here are the first few details about what will be in Disney California Adventure's upcoming Marvel Land, and perhaps most importantly...when it will open:
One year after Star Wars Land opens, Marvel Land will be ready to welcome its first guests at Disney California Adventure
Though all eyes are on next year's opening of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge at Disneyland Park, across the Esplanade it has been confirmed that the following year will see the official opening of Marvel Land at Disney California Adventure. And though two years from announcement might seem like a quick turnaround for this new land, it is worth remembering that the signature attraction for this new land, Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission: Breakout is already operational, which means Disney will be filling in the area around this current attraction with character experiences and other themed buildings to create a full "land", similar to the way Disney's Hollywood Studios created Toy Story Land around the pre-existing Toy Story Mania attraction.
Based on the concept art above, it looks like characters will be a big part of this new land, with Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, the Black Panther, Gamora and Groot all able to meet guests in this new land, while surrounded by familiar structures, including an Avengers Tower and the Sanctum Sanctorum.
And though we don't know all of the particulars yet about character experiences or new buildings, Disney went ahead and confirmed something today that had been previously rumored for a long time...
A Bug's Land is officially going away, and will be fully closed by the end of the summer
A Bug's Land, which sits next to the current Hollywood Land area of Disney California Adventure, has long been rumored to be on the chopping block, and now it has been confirmed that the home of Heimlich's Chew-Chew Train will be closing later this year to make way for Marvel Land. Already, It's Tough to Be a Bug closed permanently earlier this week, and Disney has said that the rest of this land will close forever later this summer.
While this land certainly had a lot of charm, the A Bug's Life IP has not endured the same way as other Pixar properties, and this closure definitely makes a lot of sense, especially with the immersive Cars Land right next door. But could another, unconfirmed closure be on the way?
