Disney parks are constantly changing their refurbishment schedules, making it difficult for guests to keep up with the operating times and latest news regarding their favorite attractions, resorts, shops, and restaurants. Here are a few big, upcoming changes that are either confirmed by their respective parks or at the least very strongly rumored for the very near future.
This month's refurbishment update includes an interesting closure at the Norway pavilion in Epcot, the partial closure of the most popular store at Disney Springs, plus we look ahead to the reopening of Pirates of the Caribbean (complete with new Redhead scene) later this month!
1. Stave Church Gallery (Epcot)
Dates: March 12 - Spring 2018
The current "Norsk Kultur: Inspiration for Disney 'Frozen'" gallery inside the Stave Church Gallery at Epcot's Norway pavilion will close in just a few days on March 12, to make way for a brand new "Gods of the Vikings" display. This new exhibit will give guests the opportunity to learn more about the popular Viking gods Thor, Odin, Freyja and Loki through displays of authentic Viking artifacts, many of which have been sourced through the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU)’s Department of Archaeology and Cultural History, which is affiliated with the NTNU University Museum. This is actually the third time Disney has partnered with this group for exhibits in the Norway pavilion.
Though we'd expect most of this exhibit to revolve around classical interpretations of these mythological characters, we would be very surprised if Disney didn't include a few references to the Marvel series of films, as they have had some success sneaking in references to technically off-limits Marvel characters before.
No re-opening date has been announced yet for this exhibit, but we're not expecting this closure to last more than a few weeks. Look for this new exhibit to open sometime either late next month or in early May.
2. Kringla Bakeri og Kafe (Epcot)
Dates: Now - Summer 2018
Also at the Norway pavilion in Epcot, fan favorite Kringla Bakeri og Kafe closed early last month for a very long refurbishment that is expected to last several months, potentially mid-way into the summer. During this lengthy closure, the inside will be expanded and redecorated.
Though fans of school bread might be a little bit upset by this news, Disney has announced that a temporary kiosk called Midnattsol Bakeri will open on the World Showcase promenade that will feature many of the pastry items will be served at the temporary location, including the aforementioned school bread!
