Theme park attractions come and go all the time, and even though we’d like all our favorite rides and shows to stick around forever, the sad fact is that we have to say goodbye to at least a few every year.
Just a few weeks ago, La Nouba at Disney Springs had its final performance and Flights of Wonder at Disney's Animal Kingdom closed to make way for a new Up-inspired show. However, even though the end of 2017 saw several closures and 2018 is just getting starting, there are several more confirmed and rumored closures that Disney fans should know about, including one that is happening this weekend!
1 Stitch’s Great Escape
Location: Magic Kingdom
Status: Going extinct January 6, 2018
Though it was rumored in 2016, and again in 2017, it looks like 2018 will finally see the end of Stitch's Great Escape at the Magic Kingdom. While reported plans for a VR-based Wreck-It Ralph replacement attraction have supposedly been scrapped, Disney is placing this attraction on seasonal status at the beginning of next year, which makes us once again skeptical of the future of Stitch’s Great Escape in Tomorrowland. Will 2018 be the year this attraction finally bites the dust?
According to WDWNT, as of January 6th (the last scheduled day of seasonal operation for this attraction), Stitch's Great Escape will quietly close for good, and Disney will begin preparing this piece of prime piece of Tomorrowland real estate ready for something completely new (and not involving Stitch) that has yet to be announced.
While this rumor seems to pop up every year, 2018 could finally be the year that Stitch's Great Escape closes for good. And that's not the only attraction that is once again rumored to be on the chopping block this year...
2. The Circle of Life: An Environmental Fable
Status: Going extinct February 3, 2018
Over a year ago an unexpected refurbishment fueled rumors that the Lion King attraction Circle of Life: An Environmental Fable (which has been showing at The Land pavilion since 1995) swirled and now, according to WDWMagic, this attraction could finally close in just a few weeks. According to this report, this attraction will have its final showing on February 3 2018, after which this space will be taken over by Disney Performing Arts group, for performances and classes primarily for visiting youth.
Though not officially confirmed by Disney, this move makes a lot of sense, as this attraction got barely any foot traffic and was unfortunately very outdated.
