4 Endangered Attractions You Should See Before They Disappear FOREVER (September 2017)

Theme park attractions come and go all the time, and even though we’d like all our favorite rides and shows to stick around forever, the sad fact is that we have to say goodbye to at least a few every year.

This month, we take a look at a number of previously-announced closures happening over the next few months, including two at Universal Orlando Resort, the first of which is closing today!

1. Dragon Challenge

Location: Islands of Adventure

Status: Going extinct September 4, 2017

Though it has been a long time coming, Dragon Challenge, the ride formerly known as Dueling Dragons, will indeed be closing forever after its last day of operation on September 4th. Universal has confirmed that the new attraction replacing Dragon Challenge will be a roller coaster thrill ride of some sort, though it will not be outdoor like its predecessor, and will have some dark ride elements, similar to Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts. However, we don't have any concrete details about what this attraction will be based on (rumors are swirling about a Fantastic Beasts tie in) or when it might open, so you'll have to stay tuned for more information about this one!

2. Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure

Location: Universal Studios Florida

Status: Going extinct November 4, 2017

One of the best-loved parts of Halloween Horror Nights is Bill and Ted’s Excellent Halloween Adventure. This irreverent celebration of pop culture has been a fixture of Universal’s annual Halloween event since 1992, skewing popular film, tv, celebrities and even other theme parks (particularly Walt Disney World) for 25 years. But earlier this week Universal shocked longtime Halloween Horror Nights fans by announcing that this show, which has been a part of this event since its second year, would be having its last year of performances in 2017, and would not be a part of Halloween Horror Nights in 2018, which means the final performance of this show will be on November 4, 2017.

This was obviously a huge blow to fans of this event, who have long considered Bill and Ted’s Excellent Halloween Adventure to be an integral part of the culture of Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights. And while Universal hasn’t officially said why they are retiring this show, rumors persist that this closure is due to the imminent destruction of the Fear Factor theater due to yet another Harry Potter expansion
