This week at Walt Disney World, we say goodbye to two classic attractions, Disney finalizes plans for the holidays, plus an Epcot favorite returns!
Outside Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando Resort announces a new event, plus things get even worse for SeaWorld Orlando.
1. Mission: Space returns with new green team mission
Mission: Space returned from its refurbishment this week, and guests who board this attraction will notice a number of changes, including an all-new pre-show featuring acress Gina Torres, as well as technical upgrades on the ride itself, including brand new crystal-clear displays. However, the most striking change is of course the addition of a new mission on the green “less intense” side of this attraction. Instead of going to Mars, guests will take part in a fun journey around Earth from orbit that is like a signseeing tour from above
During the ride guests will be able to take in popular sites visible from orbit like the Hawaiian Islands, Italy’s “boot” and the Northern Lights as seen from space before finally landing at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Of course, it wouldn't be a Walt Disney World attraction if there wasn't a little peril at the end, but you'll have to check out this attraction for yourself to see how this adventure takes shape.
In addition to the new mission, the height restriction for the Green Mission has been brought down to just 40 inches, and smaller guests can use special X-2 booster seats if they want to experience this attraction.
2. The Great Movie Ride and the Universe of Energy Close
August 13th has brought the closure of two iconic Walt Disney World rides, The Great Movie Ride at Disney's Hollywood Studios and Ellen's Energy Adventure inside the Universe of Energy at Epcot. These two attractions have seen increasing wait times in there final days, with Disney's Hollywood Studios' parking lot reaching capacity during The Great Movie Ride's final days as guests flocked to this park to say goodbye to this iconic attraction.
Now that these attractions are closed, Disney can begin work on replacing the Great Movie Ride with the upcoming Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway ride, and an as-yet unnamed Guardians of the Galaxy ride at the Universe of Energy. You can learn more about these new rides here and here.
3. Holiday nighttime entertainment schedule set at Disney's Hollywood Studios
Though the summer is still bringing record temperatures to the Walt Disney World area, Disney has released its official schedule for Jingle Bell, Jingle BAM! at Disney's Hollywood Studios this holiday season. From November 9 through December 14, Jingle Bell, Jingle BAM! will be the only nighttime spectacular at this park, performing nightly at 8:00 PM. Then from December 15 through December 31, both Jingle Bell, Jingle BAM! and Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular will be performed at 6:30 PM, and 9:00 PM or 10:00 PM, respectively.
