Disney Springs has become quite the subject of controversy for the past few years, with some outspoken fans saying this re-imagined shopping district has become too much like an outlet mall and isn’t really keeping with the “spirit” of the former Downtown Disney district any more. However, no matter how you feel about the changing face of this location, in the two years since this shopping district opened, Disney has been making a lot of changes, opening new stores, offering great deals, and even hosting some character-based events.
Though we published a big update for Disney Springs just a few days ago, it looks like even more changes are happening at this shopping district, including a surprising announcement of a new Star Wars attraction coming to Disney Springs just in time for the holiday season...
1. Interactive Star Wars Experience coming to Once Upon a Toy
Several weeks ago part of the Once Upon a Toy store at Disney Springs was closed off for an unspecified refurbishment, and now we know why: a new interactive Star Wars experience is coming to Disney Springs later this year.
Named Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire, this hyper-realistic attraction will plunge guests directly into the world of Star Wars where they will be able move freely throughout an untethered, social, and multi-sensory experience in a way that allows them to interact and engage with friends, family and Star Wars characters. This ground-breaking experience will open to the public what is being called the VOID Experience Center, which will open inside Once Upon a Toy sometime this holiday season, where we'd assume more VR experiences will open if this initial Star Wars experience proves to be a success.
Though we don't know much about the storyline of this new attraction or whether it will be an upcharge experience (we're guessing it will be, considering it is being operated by a third party) but preperations to transform this space inside Once Upon a Toy are already underway, and it looks like guests will be able to enjoy Walt Disney World's first truly next generation VR attraction very soon!
2. American Idol pulls into Disney Springs this month
American Idol is returning to TV this fall and it has been announced that when this series begins its 2017 search for undiscovered talent it will do so at Disney Springs. On August 17th, a special American Idol bus will pull into this shopping district bringing with it former American Idol winners Jordin Sparks, Kris Allen and Ruben Studdard, who will be on hand to greet hopeful contestants looking to sing their way on this show. After that, guests will be able to audition via a special pop-up audition kiosk that will be available from August 18th, through Friday, September 15th.
