Theme park attractions come and go all the time, and even though we’d like all our favorite rides and shows to stick around forever, the sad fact is that we have to say goodbye to at least a few every year.

This month, we take a look at two confirmed, major closures coming in just a few weeks, plus some rumored closures that could be hitting Epcot in the next few years. But first, let's look at what's happening next month....

1. Universe of Energy

Location: Epcot

Status: Going extinct August 13, 2017

Disney has finally confirmed a few days ago that a Guardians of the Galaxy-inspired attraction will be added to Future World sometime in the next few years. Though this might seem like a strange addition to this part of Epcot considering the Guardians of the Galaxy film franchise is supposed to take place in the present day, Disney has said that this franchise makes for a good addition to Epcot’s Future World because it gives guests the chance to experience the excitement and adventure offered by space travel.

While we don't know a lot about what exactly this new ride will be, Disney apparently wants to get construction on this new attraction started as soon as possible, as Ellen's Energy Adventure inside the Universe of Energy has been confirmed to be having its last day of operation on August 13, 2017. No release date for the untitled Guardians of the Galaxy attraction has been set, but based on the concept art below it looks like Disney will be re-using the Universe of Energy building, which means they are likely targeting a late 2018 or early 2019 opening for this new attraction

While we're certainly going to miss Ellen's Energy Adventure inside this building, rumors about this attraction's demise have been circulating for several years, so this isn't exactly a big surprise. However, there's another closure happening next month that many did not see coming...

2. The Great Movie Ride

Location: Disney's Hollywood Studios

Status: Going extinct August 13, 2017

It was also revealed at the recent D23 Expo Disney Parks and Resorts Panel that the Great Movie Ride will be closing as well on August 13th to make way for Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway, a new dark ride that will use "2 1/2 D" technology to bring the world of the newest generation of Mickey Mouse shorts to life.

Interestingly, even though Disney is completely gutting the interior of this building it has been confirmed that they will be keeping the exterior structure of The Great Movie Ride, which they are now referring to as a facility named the "Chinese Theater". Given that this is another project where Disney will be using an existing structure and building a new ride inside, we'd imagine this new ride will again be ready in another 1-2 years.

In the meantime though, with this closure, Disney's Hollywood Studios will be down to just 4 rides total until Toy Story Land opens next year. And though fans of this park will lament yet another closing, this one at least seems in line with the future of this park as Disney sheds the last trace of the original "studios" theming of Disney's Hollywood Studios as it gets ready for its new identity as a park that celebrates current films and characters, instead of the making of movies.

I'm disappointed that we were only given a months notice for the closings. We're headed to Walt Disney World in August and will miss the Great Movie Ride and the Energy with Ellen ride by a week :(
