When a new attraction, show or even character meet and greet debuts at Walt Disney World, guests generally have plenty of advance notice, with Disney wisely building up anticipation for its newest efforts for weeks or even months. However, Disney bucked this trend earlier this week when a brand new nighttime spectacular debuted at Disney’s Hollywood Studios on Friday, May 26th with no advance notice whatsoever.
Named Disney Movie Magic, this new nighttime spectacular is another projection show, similar to Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular, just without the fireworks. However, this new show doesn’t actually replace the nightly celebration of all things Star Wars, as it actually begins 30 minutes before that show, functioning almost like Once Upon a Time at the Magic Kingdom, warming guests up for the main evening show.
This new show has a 10- minute running time, and as you might expect considering the name, showcases memorable moments from classic movies. The new show is almost like the finale scene of the Great Movie Ride, but with longer clips and a much stronger focus on Disney movies.
Though the debut of this show definitely caught us off guard, here are some things you should probably know about this surprise addition to the Disney’s Hollywood Studios lineup
1. It is the first nighttime spectacular at Walt Disney World to feature Marvel characters
Though projection shows are pretty common right now at Walt Disney World, Disney Movie Magic is the very first projection show to feature Marvel characters, with both Doctor Strange as well as the Guardians of the Galaxy having lengthy segments in this show.
While we’re not entirely sure if this violates the terms of the Marvel contract with Universal, this could be one of the reasons why Disney hasn’t been promoting this show at all. Just like the Doctor Strange and Guardians of the Galaxy meet and greets (which both also were absent from Disney’s official website and social media channels), Disney might be restricted with how they can promote attractions that use these characters, even if they are technically able to use them in the parks. You can read more about the Marvel contract here.
2. There are some treats for fans of more obscure films
Though the majority of films that are showcased in Disney Movie Magic will be well-known to Disney fans (Beauty and the Beast, Pirates of the Caribbean, Mary Poppins, etc) There are some treats for fans of more obscure Disney films, including fan favorites like Newsies and The Rocketeer. Interestingly, the original Tron also gets a lengthy segment in this new show as well, which is great news for fans of this classic sci-fi film.
