Last year Disney announced that its so-called indoor theme park, DisneyQuest, would officially be closing its doors forever sometime in 2016 to make way for a brand new NBA-themed dining and entertainment experience, coming in 2017. However, as we are now in the closing weeks of 2016, you might have noticed that DisneyQuest is in fact still open, and operating every day on the West Side of Disney Springs. So what’s happening here? We finally got some answers recently about what's going on with DisneyQuest, and if you are a fan of this location, it is kind of a mixed bag. First, let's talk about the good news...

1. DisneyQuest is now set to remain open in 2017

Disney has confirmed to both Cast Members as well as the Orlando Sentinel that DisneyQuest is now going to remain open into 2017. Though this arcade and virtual playground is certainly not as popular as it once was (and admission is no longer included as part of the highest tier of Walt Disney World annual passes), DisneyQuest still attracts a moderate amount of guests, especially on rainy days. And now that Disney has confirmed that DisneyQuest is indeed staying open for an indeterminate amount of time, we wouldn’t be surprised if admission is discounted in the coming months so Disney can maximize potential traffic in this building while it remains open for guests. And as of right now, we don't know how long that will be, as other developments seem to be complicating things...

2. The NBA Experience is (maybe) still happening?

As you might recall, the original reason for Disney announcing the closure of DisneyQuest back in 2015 was because Disney wanted to gut the DisneyQuest building and use it to create the NBA Experience, a massive basketball-themed restaurant and entertainment complex that would feature several dining rooms, hands-on NBA activities, interactive experiences and even a retail store.  However, as early as last year we heard rumors about trouble with this ambitious project, with issues concerning the NBA license as well as costs associated with construction causing problems.

However, in an interesting development, the Orlando Sentinel reported recently that Disney and the NBA are maintaining that this basketball-themed attraction is still being planned for the site, with construction details yet to be announced. However, with no closure date in sight for DisneyQuest and zero meaningful updates on this project in over a year, the NBA experience is really looking like it is unlikely to ever come to fruition at Disney Springs, even if neither Disney nor the NBA are quite ready to confirm its demise just yet.

Although uncertainty with the NBA project may be prolonging DisneyQuest's life in the short term, if we look past 2016 (and potentially 2017 as well) there are some other factors that ensure that even if the NBA Experience is cancelled outright, DisneyQuest still won't be able to last very much longer at Disney Springs...
