Character changes are happening so fast at Walt Disney World that it might be a little hard for fans to keep up with the almost daily character updates that are coming out of the resort. Unfortunately, most of the news has been in regards to the massive cost-cutting measures that are happening all across Walt Disney World, which has brought several character cuts to the Magic Kingdom and Epcot.
However, even though a lot of the news has been disappointing for character fans recently, it looks like Disney hasn't totally abandoned this type of attraction as there’s finally some positive developments on the horizon for Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Here's all the new character developments coming to this park in the next six months.
1. Mickey and Minnie (finally!) get a permanent home
Sorcerer Mickey has been a constant at Disney’s Hollywood Studios for many years, but unfortunately this mouse has been a bit hard to spot recently. While he used to have his own dedicated meet and geet space in the Magic of Disney Animation, when this former attraction became the Star Wars Launch Bay in 2015 Mickey was moved to the former queue area of the Studio Backlot Tour. However, when the holiday season came around Mickey was bumped out of this location in favor of seasonal character Santa Goofy and moved to the soundstage that used to house The Legend of Captain Jack Sparrow attraction. Now with work on Toy Story Land set to begin sometime in the near future, Mickey is in need of a new location yet again. But the good news is it looks like this mouse on the move will finally be once again receiving a permanent meet and greet location in the park.
Earlier this week Disney confirmed that Mickey and Minnie will begin meeting guests at a new “Mickey and Minnie Starring in Red Carpet Dreams” experience this summer. This meet and greet will feature a red carpet for guests to walk as they head inside to meet Minnie Mouse, who will meet guests first in this new experience. Minnie will be sporting a classic look for this character experience, dressed like a Hollywood starlet with her own dazzling background. From there, guests will then be able to go meet Mickey in his iconic Sorcerer’s Apprentice costume in front of a Fantasia-inspired background. The location for this new experience will be off Commissary Lane near the Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater, in the unused area of the Hyperion theater that formerly housed the audition rooms for the American Idol Experience.
Though unconfirmed by Disney, this new development likely that this means the end of the Disney Junior Minnie Mouse meet and greet in the Animation courtyard, as Disney doesn’t typically offer more than one meet and greet per character, per park (unless they are part of a character dining experience, like Chip N’ Dale at Epcot). After all, characters can’t be in two places at once, even with Disney magic!
Though Disney has not confirmed anything yet, it seems like a safe bet that another Disney Junior character (like Miles from Tomorrowland, Sheriff Callie or perhaps even fellow Mickey Mouse Clubhouse resident Daisy Duck) will join the lineup after Minnie Mouse vacates this location in the next few weeks.
