After a lengthy refurbishment, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is finally due to reopen at Disneyland - and the ride will now boast some stunning additional special effects.
The mine train roller coaster will officially reopen on March 17, 2014, but has already begun previews to Cast Members. The coaster's track and ride vehicles have been upgraded, but the biggest enhancement comes in the form of an explosive new finale. To encourage guests to re-ride Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Disney has programmed the effects such that not every effect will be seen on each ride.
The audio system on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has also been enhanced, sharpening the sounds heard by guests on the trains and in the caverns and buildings. Disney promises that even the "wildlife" on the mountain can be heard more distinctly.
You can see the updated version of "the wildest ride in the wilderness" in the video below (courtesy of Inside the Magic). Look out for the finale at around the two minute mark.
There's no word yet on whether the updated effects will also be brought to other versions of the ride at the Magic Kingdom, Disneyland Paris and Tokyo Disneyland. The Magic Kingdom version was enhanced with a new interactive queue in 2012.
