Disneyland's Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage will be closed for an extensive refurbishment throughout most of 2014, the park has confirmed.
While rumors have suggested that the closure will be permanent, Disney insists that the ride will be undergoing a major makeover. This will include the addition of "colorful, more vibrant underwater rockwork and coral". The 5 million gallons of water in the attraction's lagoon will be treated by the Orange County Sanitation District before being released into a local groundwater aquifer.
The Submarine Voyage attraction first opened in 1959. operating until September 9, 1998. Although Disney initially promised that it would reopen in 2003, it actually remained shuttered until 2007 before reopening with a new theme based around Pixar's Finding Nemo. More than 30 tons of recycled glass were used in the creation of the ride's lagoon, with 40 unique colors being used to decorate the surrounding area.
Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage will close on January 6, 2014, and is due to reopen in "late 2014".
