The Smiler roller coaster reopens at Alton Towers in time for Ultimate Fireworks event

The Smiler

Alton Towers £18 million new roller coaster is back up-and-running, just in time for one of the busiest weekends in the park's season - The Ultimate Fireworks events.

It had been widely suspected that The Smiler may remain closed for the rest of the 2013 season, following an accident that saw riders injured when small plastic guide wheels fell from its second, vertical lift hill and struck them. However, it is once again carrying riders in the X-Sector section of the park.

The Ultimate Fireworks events are a huge draw to Alton Towers, and operator Merlin will be glad to see The Smiler back in action - though the risk of further downtime still remains.

The Smiler shattered the world record for "most inversions on a coaster" when it debuted in May, and has received critical acclaim despite its frequent operational problems.
