Disney has announced its first theme park ride to be themed around a Marvel character, with the Iron Man Experience due to open at Hong Kong Disneyland in late 2016.
The firm acquired Marvel in a $4 billion deal in September 2009, but has made limited use of its comic book characters at its US parks. At Walt Disney World, its hands are tied by a pre-existing licensing deal that Marvel has with the Universal Orlando Resort, which sees its characters appear in the Marvel Super Hero Island area of Islands of Adventure.
Disney Imagineer Andy Sinclair-Harris revealed the news, posting a picture of the announcement (featuring Disney Parks boss chairman Tom Staggs) on his Twitter feed:

It was revealed in February that a Marvel-themed land was on its way to Hong Kong Disneyland, but no attractions were announced at that time. Few details have been released of the Iron Man Experience attraction, but it will feature a display of lead character Tony Stark's inventions. The ride itself will see guests take to the street and skies above Hong Kong to join in a battle with Iron Man himself.
Concept art for the exterior of the Iron Man Experience is embedded below:
Andrew Kam, managing director of Hong Kong Disneyland, said of the plans: "The new Marvel-themed area will give guests visiting Hong Kong Disneyland even more reasons to visit. We are pleased to see the momentum of growth continue at Hong Kong Disneyland benefitting both our resort and the entire Hong Kong tourism industry."
Hong Kong Disneyland recently completed a major expansion programme, which involved the addition of three new lands and two E-Ticket attractions: Mystic Manor and Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars.
