Universal Studios Hollywood has revealed that zombies will overrun a large part of its backlot during Halloween Horror Nights 2013, as part of an experience based on TV series The Walking Dead.
The zombies will occupy an urban-themed area of the backlot, which will lead up to the entrance of The Walking Dead: No Safe Haven horror maze. Universal has promised that the undead will leap out from behind buildings and claw at guests through windows as they approach the maze.
The outdoor area will be one of three attractions themed around The Walking Dead, with the others being The Walking Dead: No Safe Haven and a section of the Terror Tram studio tour.
Halloween Horror Nights' Creative Director John Murdy and The Walking Dead's special effects expert Greg Nicotero discuss the attractions in the video below:
Legendary director and Universal Studios Hollywood consultant Steven Spielberg said of the latest Walking Dead attraction: "Universal's backlot was deliberately created to mirror real life urban streets, metropolitan cityscapes and intimate European settings. As filmmakers, we strive to find the ideal, most authentic filming locations to legitimize our productions and make every scene as realistic as possible, which is why Universal Studios Hollywood continues to take creative risks by extending Halloween Horror Nights to include the studios’ backlot. Theme park guests will be in awe when they have this rare opportunity to walk through the backlot’s definitive Hollywood movie-making sets."
Greg Nicotero, the Executive Producer of The Walking Dead, commented: "The Walking Dead maze that Universal Studios Hollywood is bringing to life at this year's Halloween Horror Nights event will take credibility to entirely new levels. Universal's creative team is painstakingly re-creating the world of ‘The Walking Dead’ for this year’s maze and the level of authenticity will make guests and fans feel like they’ve stepped into Season 3. Located on the production backlot area of the studio, people will be able to experience iconic moments from the show up close and personal."
Universal Studios Hollywood's Halloween Horror Nights runs on select nights from September 20.
