Blackpool Pleasure Beach has announced that it will host a special event on August 23, 2013 to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Big Dipper roller coaster.
The after-hours event will see The Big Dipper and a selection of other rides remain open after the remainder of the park has closed. Guests who pay £18 will receive unlimited rides on the Big Dipper, Infusion, the Grand Prix and Wallace & Gromit’s Thrill-O-Matic, as well as food. A cheaper package, priced at £10, includes just the food and the "party atmosphere". The rides will close at 11pm.
One of Blackpool Pleasure Beach’s most iconic rides, The Big Dipper was first constructed in 1923, and subsequently extended in 1936. It received another major upgrade ahead of the 2010 season, with a refurbished station and repainted trains.
The classic wooden roller coaster sees riders boarding old-style trains that feature padded seats. These are pulled to the top of a 60-feet-tall lift hill, hitting a top speed of 40 miles per hour as they race over a series of further hills during its 3,000-feet-long circuit.
Meanwhile, Richard De Vere's Beyond Belief show in Blackpool Pleasure Beach's Horseshoe theatre has been cancelled for the remainder of the 2013 season. The performer has broken his foot in several places.
