The Sandstorm attraction at Busch Gardens Tampa is set to close for the second half of 2013, sparking rumors that it could be removed from the park altogether.

Sandstorm is being moved from its present location in the Timbuktu area of the park, in order to make for a new drop tower that is expected to open in 2014. It is currently listed on the Busch Gardens Tampa website as closing on June 3, along with nearby Bush Flyers and Desert Runners. The rides are listed as reopening on December 31, leading to rumors that they will actually close for good.

The drop tower ride had originally been expected to open in 2013, but the lack of progress to date points to an opening date in 2014. Little is known about the attraction at present, although it is expected to stand at several hundred feet tall.

The park's last major addition was the Cheetah Hunt multi-launch roller coaster in 2011.
