Alton Towers has revealed on its official website that The Sanctuary horror maze will close on April 14, ahead of the debut of The Smiler roller coaster in May.
The Sanctuary was originally installed as a temporary attraction for the Scarefest 2012 Halloween events, and is hosted inside the Alton Towers mansion itself. It was brought back for the start of the 2013 season to compensate for the lack of The Smiler, but the park has seemingly decided that the cost of running it is not justified outside of the school holidays.
The Sanctuary takes guests on a tour of an "abandoned facility", which is claimed to have been uncovered during construction of The Smiler in the X-Sector area. Its plot is based around the mysterious "Ministry of Joy", which undertook experiments on humans during the early 20th century.
The Smiler's trains recently arrived on-site, and the coaster is expected to begin testing soon.
