The Tokyo Disney Resort broke its annual attendance record during 2012, pulling in 27.5 million visitors to the Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea theme parks.
The figure narrowly beat the previous record of 27.22 million visitors, set in 2008. Following a difficult 2011, when the resort was badly affected by the major earthquake that struck Japan's coastline, the opening of new attractions such as Toy Story Mania! helped to pull in huge crowds in 2012.
2013 will see special events being held throughout the year to mark the Tokyo Disney Resort's 30th anniversary. A clone of Star Tours: The Adventures Continue, which has proven very popular at Disneyland and Disney's Hollywood Studios, is also expected to draw large crowds when it opens on May 7.
Meanwhile, Universal Studios Japan in Osaka saw its attendance rise by 10 percent to 9.75 million in 2012, finally approaching the 11 million that visited the park during its debut year in 2001. The installation of a clone of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter is likely to see that figure increase dramatically in 2014.
