Universal Studios Hollywood has reportedly confirmed that it plans to open a clone of Universal Studios Florida's Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem attraction.
The LA Times reports that a spokeswoman confirmed the long-standing rumor, but refused to provide any further details or an estimated opening date. The simulator-style ride is widely expected to replace the shuttered Terminator 2 3-D: Battle Across Time.
Construction work is known to be ongoing in the former Terminator 2 3-D building, which was recently struck by a minor fire. Significant changes will be required to the building's interior, with Universal Studios Hollywood potentially using the new addition as a stop-gap attraction to pull in new guests while it constructs its own version of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
Based on the $540-million grossing Universal Pictures movie, Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem is the first ride at any of Universal's theme parks to be based on a Universal-produced animated movie. It replaced Jimmy Neutron's Nicktoon Blast at Universal Studios Florida, and reuses the previous attraction's simulator-style ride system.
