Oakwood, the largest theme park in Wales, has announced plans for a major new expansion for the 2013 season, adding a £4 million area boasting seven new attractions.
Aimed squarely at families, the expansion will feature a new water ride, a number of children's play areas, and a restaurant and café. Details of the new rides are currently under wraps, with further information set to be released in early 2013.
Describing thew plans, Oakwood's Park Director Dominic Jones said: "This represents by far the largest investment at the park for more than a decade and is a direct response to visitor feedback we have received. As well as creating a must-see new destination for families, the development also represents a major boost for the local economy and will create a number of new jobs."
"It will totally transform the visitor experience and provide a magical new series of attractions aimed specifically at the family market. As part of the investment we are also creating family-friendly facilities within the themed area as well as baby-changing facilities, high chairs and microwaves. This will be the largest new attraction of its kind in Wales and is the first phase in an ambitious and ongoing programme of investment over the coming years.”
Though it features fewer rides and attractions than some of its larger competitors in neighbouring England, Oakwood is still home to some major draws. This includes the Megafobia wooden roller coaster (which consistently ranks highly in enthusiast polls), Speed (a Gerstlauer Euro-Fighter coaster boasting a 97-degree first drop) and Drenched (a water coaster that stands at an intimidating 120-feet-tall).
The park changed hands in 1998, moving from family ownership into the hands of Spanish firm Aspro Ocio S.A. Fewer new rides have been added since, with the owners believed to be focusing on improving its profitability.
