The Tokyo Disney Resort's two theme parks, Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea, attracted record numbers of visitors between April and September, 2012.
The parks pulled in a total of 13.25 million visitors during the period, beating last year's numbers by some 23.4 percent and beating the previous record of 13.05 million (set in 2008). The resort's owners, the Oriental Land Company, cited the opening of Toy Story Mania! at Tokyo DisneySea and the popularity of a number of summer shows as the reasons for the attendance boost.
In a canned statement, the Oriental Land Company said: "The implementation of a major new attraction and the new special events helped to draw more attendance than was expected over the first half of this fiscal year. Moreover, the low number of rainy days during the summer vacation period was also a factor in making this fiscal year’s first half attendance our highest ever."
Last year's figures for the same period were badly hit by the major earthquake that struck Japan in March 2011. The Tokyo Disney Resort was forced to close both of its theme parks for over a month following the earthquake, with neither operating during the first two weeks of the 2011/12 fiscal year.
