Disneyland has confirmed that its popular Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Forbidden Eye attraction will close for a lengthy refurbishment period on September 4, 2012.
The ride is not expected to return to action until December 8, in time for the busy Christmas period. The downtime will give Disneyland a chance to revive some of Indiana Jones Adventure's special effects, a number of which have been in decline in recent years.
First opened in March 1995, Indiana Jones Adventure sees guests boarding jeep-style vehicles that are attached to a motion simulator base. They then race off into the darkness of the mysterious Temple of the Forbidden Eye, in search of three gifts on offer from the ancient god Mara.
Set pieces during the ride's circuit include giant snakes, rats, a rolling boulder and an encounter with the disfigured Mara himself. The ride also features an innovative introductory scene, in which the jeep appears to select one of three hallways, each resulting in a different gift from Mara being bestowed on riders.
Theme Park Tourist readers currently rate Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Forbidden Eye as the number one attraction at Disneyland.
