Kennywood has opened its new ride for the 2012 season, Black Widow, which swings guests back and forth at speeds of up to 68 miles per hour.
Black Widow is a Zamperla Giant Discovery Ride, and can hold a maximum of 40 guests. It is similar other gyro swing-style rides, with guests sitting in a circular gondola that spins and swings like a giant pendulum. However, it is on a much larger scale than the majority of these, hitting a maximum height of 146-feet.
At its peak, riders on Black Widow are suspended at an angle of 120 degrees, leaving them hanging in a near-upside-down position. The ride experience is captured in the "point-of-view" video below, released by the park following its debut on June 8:
Kennywood's new addition replaces Pitt Fall, which was removed at the end of the 2011 season. An Intamin Giant Drop Tower, Pitt Fall was the tallest ride of its kind in the world when it first opened in 1997, standing at some 251-feet-tall. It saw riders carried to the top of a tower, before free-falling at 65mph back down to the bottom.
