SeaWorld San Diego has opened its highly-anticipated new roller coaster, Manta, which features two launch sections and extensive theming.
Designed to recreate the experience of gliding like a real-life manta ray, the new coaster opened in time for the Memorial Day 2012 celebrations. Its circuit includes more than a dozen twists and turns, and begins with an immersive launch through a tunnel that is surrounded by a 270-degree projection screen that shows images of rays and other marine creatures.
Like the original Manta roller coaster at sister park SeaWorld Orlando, SeaWorld San Diego's version is accompanied by an aquarium, enabling guests to view manta rays and other sea-dwellers up-close. The coasters themselves, though, are completely different, with the San Diego version being a traditional sit-down steel coaster rather than a "flying" coaster like the Orlando version.
