Alton Towers was forced to close its gates on Wednesday April 4, 2012, after extreme weather conditions struck parts of the UK.
The theme park did not open to the public as planned, and turned away guests who had purchased advance tickets. These will be valid for visits on alternative dates, according to responses given on the Alton Towers Facebook page. The park is expected to return to normal operations on Thursday, April 5.
While March was one of the warmest on record in the UK, early April has seen several regions of the country hit by snow, ice and gale-force winds. Yorkshire and Derbyshire (which is adjacent to Staffordshire, where Alton Towers is located) have been among the worst affected areas.
The Alton Towers Resort is currently gearing up for the busy Easter school holidays period, traditionally one of the busiest times of its annual calendar. Two new attractions, Nemesis Sub-Terra and Ice Age Dawn of the Dinosaurs - The 4-D Experience, have opened at the park for the 2012 season.
