Luigi's Flying Tires

Luigi's Flying Tires, one of the attractions in Disney California Adventure's new Cars Land, appears to have entered the first stages of testing.A video posted to YouTube shows a single "tire" slowly making its way across the ride's surface. This is fantastic news for guests eagerly awaiting the opening of the new land.

Despite its fresh moniker, the concept behind Luigi’s Flying Tires was first incorporated into the Disneyland Resort in 1961, when Disneyland Park opened the Flying Saucers attraction in Tomorrowland.

In both attractions, guests sit in large, circular vehicles (in Luigi’s case, disguised as tires), which “levitate” over a cushion of air when supplied with a constant release of air from pores in the ride’s surface, not unlike an air hockey table. The vehicles, without a motor or fuel, can then be turned and accelerated by adjustments of the riders’ leaning direction.

The Flying Saucers attraction was located at Disneyland Park from 1961 - 1966. Luigi's Flying Tires will borrow the concept over fifty years later.

The patent for the "air car and supporting apparatus" was granted in 1966.

Luigi’s Flying Tires is expected to open along with the rest of Cars Land (including Radiator Springs Racers and Mater's Junkyard Jamboree) in Summer 2012.
