Australia's Dreamworld to open three lands based on Dreamworks movies

Dreamworld on Australia's Gold Coast has signed a deal with Dreamworks Animation that will see the park overhaul its existing children's areas.

Three lands at the park will be themed around one of Dreamworks' popular animated movie franchises. The first two, based on Madagascar and Shrek, will open by Easter 2012. The last, a garden themed around Kung Fu Panda, will make its debut later in the year.

The Dreamworks lands won't be all-new additions to Dreamworld, but will instead replace the Nickelodeon area after the park ended its contract with the children's channel. The area will cover a total of 8,400 square metres, with the deal having been struck at a reported cost of $10 million.

Ahead of the debut of the new lands, a new stage show featuring Dreamworks characters will launch before Christmas 2011. Shrek, Puss in Boots and Kung Fu Panda's Po will all perform in the show, which will open on December 19 - four days after the park's 30th anniversary.

Dreamworld invested significantly in thrill rides during 2011. In June, the park opened Shockwave, Zamperla Disk'O ride. Later in the year, it opened BuzzSaw, an off-the-shelf Maurer X-Coaster.
