Alton Towers has submitted a planning application for a new indoor ride, which is expected to open in time for the 2012 season.
Few details are currently publicly available about the new addition, with only basic details listed on the Staffordshire Moorlands District Council website at present. The proposal is described as the "construction of a new indoor ride at Alton Towers Resort and associated hard/soft landscaping works".
There were strong rumours that Alton Towers would install a "4D" cinema for the 2011 season, with animation studio Dreamworks reportedly forcing the park to abandon plans to show the Shrek 4D movie. Ultimately, the park failed to open any new attractions this year, something which it is unlikely to repeat in 2012.
The new application describes a "ride" rather than a show, suggesting that the 4D cinema plans have been dropped. Few other details are currently known, although this could change quickly when the planning documents are released online.
Alton Towers' last new ride was the Thirteen rollercoaster, which debuted in 2010. The park has already confirmed plans to install a major new rollercoaster in 2013, which it claims will be the "only one of its kind in the world".
