Disneyland Resort updates audio description service for guests with visual disabilities

Disneyland Castle

The Disneyland Resort has announced a major update to its Audio Description service, enabling visually impaired guests to hear descriptions of outdoor locations in addition to attractions.

Launched in November 2009, the service is offered through Disney's Handheld Device, which also offers amplified audio and text captioning services via an LCD display and headset. Whereas the commentary offered by the service was previously limited to descriptions of what is happening on a range of popular attractions, information on outdoor landmarks will now also be available.

The Handheld Devices are available from the Guest Relations offices at the entrances to the Disneyland and Disney California Adventure parks, and require a fully-refundable $25 daily deposit to borrow. Outdoor descriptions for Disney California Adventure will not be available until the completion of a major refurbishment of the park in 2012, but new attraction The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Undersea Adventure is covered by the audio commentary.

Audio Description is currently offered on 20 attractions at Disneyland and Disney's California Adventure, including:

  • Enchanted Tiki Room
  • The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
  • Alice in Wonderland
  • It's a Small World
